Austin Dias' Second-Half Goal Clinches Crucial 1-0 Win for Men's Soccer

DARTMOUTH, Mass. –UMass Dartmouth junior Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.) potted his eighth goal of the season, which proved to be the difference-maker as the Corsairs held off Keene State for a crucial 1-0 decision in Little East Conference play on Senior Day.

How it Happened

Both teams battled through the elements for the first 45 minutes, but neither team was able to create a scoring opportunity on three shots per side. 

The Corsairs cracked the scoreless drought in the 53rd minute. Senior captain Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) used the back heel to slide the ball back to fellow captain Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.). Texieira then connected with Dias on the right side of the field, who was able to foot the shot over charging Owl keeper Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn.) 

The Owls saw a solid chance with an LJ Luster (Colchester, Conn.) corner kick in the 86th minute, but UMass Dartmouth keeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) made a point-blank save on a Riley Steele (Sutton, Mass.) shot to keep the hosts' advantage.

  • Carranza registered a pair of saves to claim the win for the Corsairs on the evening.
  •  Smith was strong in net for the Owls, making five stops despite taking the loss.
  • UMass Dartmouth outshot Keene State 8-7 on the afternoon, and both sides gathered five corners each.
