How It Happened
The defenses of both squads were present and accounted for early on, jostling for possession in the middle of the field in the first 45 minutes. The Corsairs controlled a slight edge in the shot total (9-6), with just three on either side needing saves from the keeper.
The Corsairs struck first in the next stanza as senior Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.) kicked the ball near the end line, and sophomore Elvis Mendes (Brockton, Mass.) rose up, heading it under the cross bar to pick up his second marker on the year. Senior Junior Robert (Providence, R.I.) picked up an additional assist with the first contact.
Later on, Bridgewater State pulled even following a corner, as the ball bounced around in the box before being picked up by Cody Shannon (Norton, Mass.) who slotted it into the bottom right of the net.
The Bears picked up the eventual game-winner inside the final minute of regulation. Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) fended off a few Corsair defenders, shooting from 15 yards out when the ball bounced off the turf and snuck by the outstretched gloves of Mike Tranghese (Monson, Mass.), giving the hosts enough to escape with the win.
