CASTLETON, Vt. -- Sophomore Joe Morehead’s (Fairhaven, Mass.) goal in the 59th minute proved to be the game-winner and lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 2-1 Little East Conference men’s soccer victory over Castleton Saturday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.
The visiting Corsairs (1-9-1, 1-3-1 LEC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on senior Vangjel Kutulla’s (Norwood, Mass.) corner kick conversion, but the host Spartans (5-5-1, 1-2-1 LEC) evened matters in the 54th minute on senior Tom Kirk’s (Gloversville, N.Y.) tally. Morehead provided the heroics for UMass Dartmouth just over five minutes later, as he drove past a pair of defenders and knocked in his second marker of the fall with his left foot on the deciding goal that gave the visitors their triumph.
Freshman Jacob Castro (Swansea, Mass.) earned his first collegiate victory with a five-save effort in net for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Alex Fernald (Phippsburg, Maine) made three stops in the setback for Castleton. The Spartans outshot the Corsairs by a 14-7 margin overall (6-5 on goal) and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the pitch.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match on Wednesday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 7:00 pm, while Castleton heads to Plymouth, N.H. on Wednesday afternoon to square off with Plymouth State in a Little East clash that begins at 3:30 pm.
