Men's Soccer Drops Opener at Western New England, 3-1
Sept. 1, 2011
SPRINGFIELD, MA-Shawn Fitzpatrick headed home a cross by Eric Marcelino in the 61st minute to break a 1-1 tie and propel host Western New England to a 3-1 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team in the 2011 season opener for both teams at the Suprenant Fields Thursday afternoon.
The Corsairs had tied the score a minute and 20 seconds into the second half on a goal by freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde/Burke HS). Borges scored 30 seconds after WNE goalkeeper Nick Starr saves a shot by UMD sophomore forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS).
Jake Bartnik put the Golden Bears ahead when he fired home a shot across the box in the 34th minute. Marcelino drew an assist. Ryan Williams made it 3-1 when he scored for WNE in the 75th minute.
The Golden Bears out shot the Corsairs, 21-11. Junior goalkeeper Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) made six saves for UMD, while Starr made four for WNE.
"We went down with about 15 minutes left in the first half, and they play was back and forth," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "Our guys might have been a little nervous, and they have a more experienced team, with 10 seniors, and they went to Europe and played some matches before they came to camp. Western New England is a good team, and hopefully we'll learn from this and move on."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while Western New England improved to 1-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Nazarene Tuesday afternoon.
