Late Goal Gives Men's Soccer Win at Salve Regina
Sept. 5, 2009
NEWPORT, RI- Junior midfielder Jason Couto (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC) broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 88th minute and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team blanked host Salve Regina, 1-0, in their 2009 season opener Saturday at Reynolds Field.
Couto converted a pass from junior midfielder Mike Alves (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) and beat SRU goalkeeper Kurt Ginthwain with a shot high into the top of the net with just two minutes and 20 seconds remaining.
"We won a ball in the middle, pushed it wide to Mike, who beat his guy and served it in to Jason, who was in the box and put it away from about 12 yards out," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "It was the first game, a lot of our guys were nervous, and Salve was big and talented. We were fortunate to come out on top at the end, due to pure work ethic and determination."
The Corsairs out shot the Seahawks, 14-8. Ginthwain made six saves. Freshman Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS), who played the first half, and freshman Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS), who played the second, each made one save.
"Both of our goalkeepers were impressive," said Almeida. "Any time you don't give up any goals, it's a testament to how well your defense and goalkeepers play."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0 with the victory while Salve dropped to 0-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Mount Ida Tuesday. .
