Sept. 6, 2011
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde/Burke HS) scored twice to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over visiting Eastern Nazarene in their 2011 home opener at Cressy Field Tuesday.
Borges converted a pass from freshman midfielder Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and scored to tie the match at 1-1 in the 23rd minute. He scored again, tying the match at 2-2, when he converted a pass from freshman midfielder Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) in the 30th minute. Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) scored with 6:50 remaining in the first half to put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good.
Sophomore forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and junior midfielder Nelson Oliveira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Massasoit CC) scored for the Corsairs in the second half. Freshman forwards Cameron McCormick (Griswold, CT/Griswold HS) and Scott Hansen (Middletown Springs, VT/Long Trail HS) scored for the Lions.
"We played good ball for short periods of time, but we still have a lot of work to do before we get into league play," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "Elton had a good game, he finished his opportunities. Our defense as a whole played well, and it was nice for our freshman goalkeeper, Tim Walsh (Stow, MA/Marian HS) to get a win in his first match."
The Corsairs outshot the Lions, 21-16. Walsh made nine saves for UMD, while juniors Chris Cherry (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and Seagers Rodrigues (Belgaum, India/RMS) combined to make seven stops for ENC.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-1 with the victory, while Eastern Nazarene dropped to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Saturday. The Lions will visit Mount Ida Wednesday.
