NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore defender Alex Machado(New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) scored the tie-breaking goal in the 61st minute to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over host Fitchburg State in a non-conference match at Michael P. Riccards Field Saturday.
Machado's first goal of the season, at the 60:16 mark, broke a 1-1 tie.
Sophomore defender Jonathan Acosta(New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead when he scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute. Lionso Ventura tied it for the Falcons when he scored in the 58th minute. George Sullivan drew an assist on the goal.
"It was a good win, we scored from two set pieces," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "We scored on a penalty kick and on a free kick. Overall, it was a good effort."
UMass Dartmouth outshot Fitchburg State, 24-19.
Junior Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) and freshman Tim Walsh(Stow, MA/Marian HS) split time in goal for the Corsairs, each playing a half. Doucette started and made one save while blanking the Falcons in the first half, and Walsh made four saves in the second half. For FSU, Aidan Hanratty and Patrick Harper saw action in goal, and combined to make eight saves.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Fitchburg State dropped to 0-4 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salem State Wednesday.
