SALEM, MA-Freshman forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored the only goal of the game to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Salem State in a non-conference match at Alumni Field Wednesday evening.
Ferreira converted a pass from sophomore midfielder Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) in the 39th minute to break a scoreless tie and account for all the scoring in the match.
"It was a short give and go pass," said UMD Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "Anthony slipped the ball through a gap in their defense, and Victor just slotted it home."
The Corsairs threatened in the second half when senior midfielder Mike Alves (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) hit the crossbar with 25 minutes remaining, then sat back and preserved their advantage.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) helped the Corsairs preserve their lead by making eight saves. The Vikings out shot UMass Dartmouth, 15-14, and SSU goalkeeper Luis Marques made four saves.
"We played a solid first half, and played well in the second half before we fell back and preserved the lead," said Bettencourt. "Everyone except the backup goalkeepers got into the game. It was a team effort. (Sophomore defender) Brady Paradis (Tiverton, RI/Providence Country Day HS) played well in the back. The point of each game is to continue to improve, and game four was better than game three. This is the best team we've played; they had some very skilled players. We're working towards the conference opener this weekend."
The Corsairs improved to 4-0 with the victory, while the Vikings fell to 0-2-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Saturday in the 2010 Little East Conference opener.
