PORTLAND, ME-Freshman forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team went on to blank host Southern Maine, 1-0, in a Little East Conference match at Memorial Field at Deering High School Saturday evening.
Ferreira scored from eight yards out, firing a shot that beat Southern Maine goalkeeper David Kreps.
"We possessed the ball in the first half and played well, but their keeper made some huge saves," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "Victor made a good play on the goal, and our people played well in the back. Overall, it was a solid team effort and a big win for a young team."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Southern Maine, 14-8. Sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) made four saves for UMD, while Kreps made six for the Huskies.
The Corsairs improved to 6-2-0 and 2-1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 2-7-1 and 2-1-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Emmanuel Tuesday.
