MEDFORD, MA-Franco Silva scored the only goal of the game in the 99th minute and host Tufts defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team, 1-0 in overtime, in a non-conference match at Bello Field Tuesday evening.
With the Corsairs putting on pressure, a long clearing pass downfield was taken by Silva, and he scored to end the match with 1:25 remaining in the first overtime period.
"We played well, we controlled the ball, and we dominated play, but we couldn't finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "On the winning goal, we were pressuring them, and they sent a long ball to one of their forwards, who sneaked in behind our defense and scored. We outplayed them in every area except the most important one. We got strong play from our midfield and (freshman goalkeeper) Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) played a phenomenal game. We pushed everyone up on a corner, the ball was cleared to a forward, he went in on a breakaway and Mike stoned him. We played well; we just didn't get the result we were hoping for."
The Corsairs out shot the Jumbos, 21-10. Phelan made five saves for UMD, while Pat Tonelli and Alan Bernstein combined to make nine for Tufts.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 8-3-0 with the defeat, while Tufts improved to 2-6-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Mass Maritime Thursday evening.
