Oct. 23, 2010
MANSFIELD, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State took a 2-0 lead and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team, 2-1, in a Little East Conference match at the Mansfield Outdoor Athletic Complex Saturday.
Freshman forward Victor Ferreira (St. Miguel, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored the UMass Dartmouth goal, converting a pass from senior midfielder Mike Alves (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) in the 63rd minute.
Jon DeCasanova gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead when he one-timed home a cross in the 10th minute, and Mike Radlbeck put ECSU up, 2-0 on a header off a free kick in the 52nd minute.
"We came out a little flat, and they scored early when we lost a 50-50 ball," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We stepped it up in the second half. Victor had a great chance from just outside the six-yard box and their goalkeeper made a big save, and (senior midfielder) Thomas Uibel (Pforzheim, Germany/Freiburg University) had a shot from 20 yards out and the keeper chased it down. (UMD sophomore goalkeeper) Mike (Phelan, Carver, MA/Carver HS) was outstanding for us, he made two breakaway saves and really kept us in it."
The Warriors outshot the Corsairs, 15-5 Phelan made five saves for UMD, while Carl Appel made three for ECSU.
The Corsairs dropped to 9-4-2 and 2-3-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Warriors improved to 11-3-2 and 4-1-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Wednesday.
