KEENE, NH-Host Keene State scored twice in the second half and came from behind to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team, 2-1, in a Little East Conference semi-final playoff match at the Owl Sports Complex Wednesday evening.
The Corsairs jumped out in front when freshman midfielder Kyle Duarte (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) converted a pass from sophomore midfielder Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) at the10:32 mark of the first half.
Brian Holmes tied it for the Owls in the 52nd minute when he fired home a loose ball from in front of the net. Danny Silverman scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute when he fired home a shot after a Keene State corner kick.
"We played very well in the first half, and then Keene State tied it up," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "On their second goal, their player received the ball at the top of the box and made a great shot into the upper 90, and we couldn't come back from that. We had a great season; we met our goals of double digits in wins and a playoff appearance. I feel for my seniors, they played their hearts out, and we just came up a little short."
The Owls outshot the Corsairs, 13-12. Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made six saves for UMD before being replaced by sophomore Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) after a collision in front of the goal in the 86th minute. Paul Blackmer made four saves for Keene State.
The Corsairs dropped to 10-6-2 with the defeat, while the Owls improved to 13-4-2 with the victory. Keene State will play Rhode Island College for the LEC championship Saturday. The match was the final action of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
