Phelan, Machado Earn LEC Weekly Honors
Sept. 19, 2011
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) has been named LEC Goalkeeper of the Week, while sophomore defender Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was selected as LEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Phelan stopped all 16 shots he faced in his first two starts of the season last week, shutting out Salem State, 2-0, and Plymouth State, 1-0. His backwards diving save in the final minute preserved UMD's victory against the Panthers.
Machado assisted on the game-winning goal against PSU, and he helped lead a defensive effort that limited Salem State and Plymouth State to eight shots on goal in each game and no goals in the Corsairs' matches last week.
"Mike's honor was very well-deserved," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "He had a great week, posting back-to-back shutouts while stepping into his role as the number one starter. Against Salem State, he was solid and consistent, and against Plymouth, he was unbelievable. We ask out goalkeepers to make easy saves, and occasionally great ones, and he made three great saves to help us earn the win. For Alex, it's been a long time coming. He had a great year as a freshman, and kind of flew under the radar. His physical presence in the back was outstanding. This year that has continued, and he is a lot more patient and a lot more vocal. He is quietly becoming a big part of our rebuilding."
The Corsairs are 4-1 and will return to action when they visit Salve Regina Tuesday.
