BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team scored twice in the first 25 minutes and went on to defeat host UMass Boston, 2-1, in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center Saturday.
Senior defender Andrew Eggleston (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown HS) put UMass Dartmouth ahead when he headed home a cross from sophomore midfielder Kyle Duarte (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) in the game's 11th minute. The Corsairs doubled their lead when they were credited with an own goal in the 25th minute when a UMass Boston defender attempted to clear a loose ball and kicked it into his own goal.
Errol Turtugalp cut the Corsairs' lead to 2-1 when he chipped home a shot from the left side of the box in the 73rd minute.
"Andrew made a great play on his goal," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "On the next goal, (senior forward) Kyle Estrella (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS/RIC) was putting on the pressure, and the defender clipped it right by the keeper. We had control of the tempo in the first half, (freshman defender) Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and Andrew were tremendous. They won every 50-50 ball and allowed us to press forward."
The Corsairs continued to put on the pressure in the second half. "Alex had a free kick in the second half from 38 yards out and he rang it off the crossbar," said Almeida. :Our young players really performed well under pressure."
UMass Boston out shot UMass Dartmouth, 20-13. Sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) made nine saves for UMD, while Brycen Dowd made seven for the Beacons.
The Corsairs improved to 5-1-0 and 1-1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Beacons dropped to 1-6-0 and 0-2-0 in the LEC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Connecticut College Tuesday.
