NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-A member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team has earned a second prestigious honor this week.
Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS), who earlier this week was named Little East Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week, has been chosen as the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Prime Time Player of the Week by College Soccer 360.
Gontijo was one of six players honored nationally. He scored three goals and added an assist as the Corsairs defeated Roger Williams and UMass Boston last week. He scored a three-goal hat trick, including the tying and winning goals as UMass Dartmouth handed RWU their first loss of the season in double overtime. He added an assist in the Corsairs' win against UMass Boston Saturday.
According to College Soccer 360, players honored must have played in a game involving a team receiving votes in the national poll, with preference given based on the quality of the opponent and situational factors involved in the player's accomplishments. Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from a team's home field.
"We're very please for Nick, he's been a huge part of our success for the entire season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "He is very skilled and very unselfish and puts his team first, which is a great attitude. His performance against Roger Williams was probably the best individual performance we've had all season. As a freshman, we're looking forward to having him as a member of our team for three and a half more years."
The Corsairs are 7-3-1 and will return to action when they host Massachusetts Maritime Thursday.
