WENHAM, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's and women's swim teams split with Gordon College in a dual meet on Thursday evening at the Bennett Center. The men edged out the Fighting Scots 101-98, while the women fell by a score of 117-86.
The Corsairs received a well-rounded effort, with five student-athletes earning a win in the ten individual events. Junior Kevin Curley (Rayham, Mass.) finished the 50 yard freestyle with a first place time of 23.62. In the 200 yard individual medley, senior Phil Lowney (Mattapoisett, Mass.) defeated the field with a time of two minutes and 13 seconds, while classmate Michael Gryss, Jr. (New Bedford, Mass.) captured the top spot in the 100 yard butterfly. Sophomore Grayham Ronan (Millis, Mass.) earned nine points for UMass Dartmouth in the 100 yard freestyle event. Bryan Baranick (Assonet, Mass.) rounded out the individual first place finishes by defeating the field in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.12.
In a neck-and-neck battle, UMass Dartmouth won the meet by a finger length in the 200 yard freestyle event. The Corsair team comprised of Derek Marshall (Marion, Mass.), Curley, TJ Doucette, Jr. (Middleboro, Mass.) and Ronan tripped the timer at 1:34.45, while the Gordon College team finished at 1:34.64.
For the women, sophomore Kaya Flanagan (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Chrissy Deveaux (North Andover, Mass.) combined for 36 of the Corsair's 86 points. Flanagan earned first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.23) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.05), while Deveaux captured the 200 yard individual medley in 2:22.05 and the 100 yard breaststroke.
In the 50 yard freestyle, freshman Jenna Leanues (Lakeville, Mass.) covered the distance with a first place time of 27.76 seconds.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the pool at 6:30 pm on Jan. 21 for a tri-meet with WPI and Wheaton. The women head to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Jan 17 for a 1pm meet.
