Feb. 13, 2010
WALTHAM, MA-Senior Matt Fahey (New Bedford, MA/Middleboro HS) finished first and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's team is in first place after the first day of the two day New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships, held at Bentley's Dana Athletic Center Saturday.
Fahey took first place in one meter diving and achieved a national qualifying mark of 427.20 points. That makes him eligible for an invitation to the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Freshman Brandon Riendeau (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet HS) finished sixth, scoring 318.25 points in the finals after scoring 368.75 in the preliminary round. Freshman Nathan O'Keefe (Taunton, MA/Coyle-Cassidy HS) finished ninth with 339.70 points. For the women, freshman Cecelia Rius (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery HS) finished eighth with a score of 330.75.
"Matt turned in an excellent performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "This is his best performance on the one meter board. He scored 23 points more than he scored last year, when he finished second. Brandon scored well on his last five dives after missing his first dive, he finished well."
The men lead the competition with 25 points after the first day. The Corsairs will return to action when the NEISDA Diving Championships conclude Sunday at Bentley.
