Junior Karsten Rathlev
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won the number one singles championship and the men's tennis team tied for third in a six-team field at last week's Stonehill Invitational, which was the Corsairs' lone intercollegiate competition during the fall non-traditional period.
Rathlev defeated David Drucker of Nichols, 8-3 and Jeff DeNunzio of Roger Williams, 6-3, 6-3, before wining the championship match against Eric Ringstad of Stonehill in a super-tiebreaker, 7-5, 0-6, (13-11).
Senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS),of the Corsairs lost in the number three singles semi-finals to Steve Carella of Nichols, 6-1, 6-3 after defeating Zack Bussiere of Roger Williams in the quarter-finals, 8-6.
Juniors Guillaume Cotte (Grenoble, France) and Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) each won the consolation championship in their bracket. Cotte lost to Chris Martin of the host Skyhawks, and then came back to defeat Kevin Erikson of RWU, 8-2, and Zach Rosenfeld of Salve Regina, 8-4. Parker lost to Ryan Swanson of RWU, 8-3, then downed Sean Bleau of Bridgewater State, 8-3, and Taylor Whitcomb of Stonehill, 8-3.
In doubles, sophomore Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) and senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) lost to Thomas Alamo and Brett Armstrong, 6-2, 6-3, then fell to Isiah Prosper and Paul Healy of Nichols, 8-6.
"This is our first time ever in fall competition, and it should help prepare us for this coming spring," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We are coming off an undefeated season, and we would like to continue that success."
The Corsairs are the defending Little East Conference champions.
