Men's Tennis Downs Becker in Opener, 8-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 win over visiting Becker in the 2012 season opener for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.

Senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS), sophomore Ethan Belisle (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee HS) and junior Zach Engstrom (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) each won twice for the Corsairs.

Lui defeated junior Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos HS) at number three singles, 6-3, 6-1, then teamed with Engstrom to down Parkhouse and senior Tim Howard (Paxton, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) at number one doubles, 8-3. Belisle defeated junior David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos HS) at number five singles, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, and combined with freshman Steve Troio (Charlton, MA) to best Graham and junior Jason Alera (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) at number three doubles, 8-1. Engstrom won over Alera at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0. 

"We played pretty well for the first match of the year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Everyone got a chance to play, and our reserves did a great job."

The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Roger Williams Thursday. Becker will host MCLA Thursday.
