NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior Jonathan Chandler (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) defeated sophomore Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) in the decisive match as visiting Roger Williams defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team, 5-4, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
The match was tied at 4-4 when Chandler outlasted Bejtlich in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, at number five singles.
The Hawks had won two of the three doubles matches, but the Corsairs pulled ahead when junior Guillaume Cotte (Grenoble, France) defeated freshman Zack Bussiere (Colchester, VT/Bacon Academy) at number two singles, 6-1, 5-2, and junior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) downed senior Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, RI/Barrington HS) at number one singles, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional HS) then tied the score when he beat UMD senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/New York City Tech) at number three singles, 6-3, 7-5.
Junior Jason Pacino (North Reading, MA/North reading HS) of the Hawks defeated senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) at number four, 6-1, 7-5, and junior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) of the Corsairs downed freshman Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) at number six, 6-0, 6-1, to set up the decisive match.
"I'm a little disappointed, although we played pretty well against a very strong team that defeated us last year in the NCAA Tournament," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We had our chances to win. I was very pleased with Karsten and Guillaume at number one and number two, who each won both of their matches."
The Corsairs dropped to 1-1 with the defeat, while the Hawks improved to 3-2 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Salem State Saturday. Roger Williams will host Western New England Saturday.
