NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-A couple of Corsairs earned their first victories of the season as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team blanked visiting Curry, 9-0, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.
Katz defeated freshman Joe Berger (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) at number five singles, 6-4, 6-0, and Troio downed freshman Eric Helberg (Somers, NY/Kildonan School) at number six singles, 6-2, 6-1. Katz and Troio defeated Berger and Helberg at number three doubles, 8-4.
Junior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS), freshman Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and junior Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) also won twice for UMD. Parker defeated freshman Cameron Chamberlain (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) at number two singles, 6-1, 6-2; Lawton downed junior Lucas Donaway (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Zygmont beat junior Paul Jeppesen (Newington, NH/Proctor Academy) at number four singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Parker and senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) combined to defeat Chamberlain and junior Tyler Collins (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay HS) at number one doubles, 8-4, and Lawton and Zygmont teamed to down Donaway and Jeppesen at number two doubles, 8-0.
"It was good to see Jonah Katz and Steve Troio win for the first time this year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Ray Lawton, Cody Zygmont and Mike Parker also won twice. It was good to get some of our other players some experience, and it was good to see them be successful."
The Corsairs improved to 6-1 with the victory, while the Colonels dropped to 0-9 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Springfield Tuesday. Curry will host Salve Regina Wednesday.
