GORHAM, ME-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches and came from behind to defeat host Southern Maine, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at Gorham High School Saturday.
With his team trailing, 3-0, after the doubles matches, junior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) put the Corsairs on the board, defeating Adam Whitman at number one, 6-2, 6-2. After freshman Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) lost to Thad St. John at number six, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, senior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) downed Zach Caron at number two, 6-3, 6-4, to make the score 4-2. Senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) defeated Scott Gagne at number three, 6-2, 6-4, and junior Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) downed Christopher Ross at number five, 6-1, 6-2, to tie the score. Sophomore Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) then won the decisive match, downing Jon Sproul at number four singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"It was a gutsy performance, to come back and win five singles after losing all of the doubles," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "I couldn't believe how well we played in singles as compared to how we played in doubles. It's tough to win five of six singles, but we did it."
The Corsairs improved to 9-2 and 4-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 6-4 and 1-3 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Wednesday.
