Men's Tennis Sets Non-Traditional Action
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team will play twice in on-traditional action this fall.
They will host Eastern Nazarene this Friday, September 21st in a dual match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex; and then they will participate in a tournament at Stonehill two weeks later to wrap up fall competition.
The Corsairs return nine veterans and five of their top seven players from the team that went 13-3 last season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championships.
"We host Eastern Nazarene Friday, and had a very difficult match against them last spring, which we won, 5-4," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "On October 6th and 7th, we will compete at the annual Stonehill Tournament, which is a two-day affair. Last year, we placed third out of six teams, with (senior) Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) winning the number one singles competition."
Mendell anticipates having another strong team. "Returning from last year's team are co-captains Karsten Rathlev and (senior) Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS), who is undefeated in league play in two years, along with (senior) Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech), (junior) Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) and (sophomore) Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS)," said Mendell. "Also returning will be (seniors) Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS), Zach Engstrom (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS). Our newest addition is Patrick Lewis from Dorchester, who will fill the spot of (junior) Guillaume Cotte (Grenoble, France), who was an integral member of the team as an exchange student last year, but has returned to France."
The Corsairs will be defending their Little East Conference championship this spring.
