Men's Tennis Drops Opener at Roger Williams, 7-2
NEWPORT, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team dropped their rain-delayed 2013 season opener to host Roger Williams, losing 7-2 in a match completed Friday at the Hawks' tennis courts.
The Hawks won four of the six singles matches played Friday, after taking a 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches Thursday. Rain suspended the match after the doubles, forcing the teams to complete the match Friday.
The Corsairs won at number one singles, where senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) defeated Zack Bussiere, 6-4, 1-0, retired; and at number five singles, where sophomore Patrick Lewis (Dorchester, MA/Dorchester HS) downed Ryan Swanson, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, (11-9).
At number two singles, junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) lost to Kevin Erikson, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. Freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) lost to Taylor Webster at number three, 6-2, 7-5, sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) fell to Eric Laboissonniere at number four, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), and senior Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) lost to Kyle Bull at number six, 6-1, 7-5.
At number one doubles, Rathlev and Lewis lost to Erickson and Jason Pacino, 9-7. At number two, Bejtlich and Chouinard lost to Swanson and Jonah Schwartz, 8-3, and at number three, Lawton and freshman Jonathan Reagan (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) lost to Laboissonniere and Bussiere, 8-0.
"I was very pleased with the way we played, considering that it was our first match and we had to play shorthanded," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "I was pleased with our underclassmen. We lost some sets we could have won. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match against Salem State."
The Corsairs will take an 0-1 record into their Little East Conference opener Saturday at Salem State. RWU improved to 4-5 with the victory.
