NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches, but fell to host UMass Boston, 7-2, in a Little East Conference match at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts Thursday.
At number one doubles, senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) and sophomore Patrick Lewis (Dorchester, MA/Dorchester HS) defeated Sean Cullen and David Hernandez, 9-8 (7-5), At number two, junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) and freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS lost to Charles Lai and Alex Loyer, 8-5. At number three, sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/ Fairhaven HS)) and freshman Jon Reagan (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) defeated Eglis Bizhoti and Seth Shavers, 8-6.
The Beacons swept all six singles matches. Bejtlich lost to Cullen at number one, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-1. Lewis fell to Hernandez at number two, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. At number three, Chouinard lost to Loyer, 6-4, 6-1. Lawton lost to Lai at number four, 6-4, 6-2. Reagan fell to Shavers at number five, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. At number six, freshman Jake Jaskolka (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) lost to Bizhoti, 6-1, 6-0.
"It was tough playing without our top two players in singles, but we lost a couple of matches we should have won, and UMass Boston played better than we did today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We'll have to play better, and hopefully, we'll get another chance to play them in the conference tournament."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-2 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the loss, while UMass Boston improved to 5-3 and 2-0 in LEC play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Springfield Tuesday. The Beacons will visit Anna Maria next Friday.
