Men's Tennis Edges Southern Maine, 5-4
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) erased a 2-0 third set deficit and came from behind to defeat junior Chris Ross (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at number-four singles as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis team came from behind to defeat visiting Southern Maine, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday.
Chouinard won the deciding match after senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) tied the match when he rallied from a 5-2 first set deficit to defeat the Huskies' Adam Whitman (Sr. New Castle, NH/Portsmouth HS) at number one singles, 7-5, 6-0.
The Corsairs won two of the three doubles matches, with Rathlev and junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) defeating Whitman and sophomore Scott Gagne (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston HS) at number one, 8-4. Chouinard and sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/ Fairhaven HS) downed Ross and sophomore Thaddeus St. John (Weld, ME/Mount Blue HS) at number two, 8-2, and USM's junior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) defeated UMD freshmen Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) and Jake Jaskolka (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) at number three, 8-5.
Bejtlich defeated St. John at number two singles, 6-0, 6-3, but freshman Jon Reagan (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) lost to Sproul at number five, 6-0, 6-3, and Neville was defeated by Dyke at number six, 6-2, 6-1. Gagne then defeated Lawton at number three, 6-0, 6-1, giving USM a 4-3 lead before the Corsairs won the final two matches.
"Dan Chouinard played outstanding tennis to come back and help us win the match," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "It was a very important win. It keeps us in the running for the league championship. Hopefully, we will win enough matches to get a first round bye in the playoffs and get a chance to play UMass Boston again."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-3 and 3-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine dropped to 2-9 and 1-4 in the LEC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Wednesday. The Huskies will host Salem State Wednesday.
