NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team blanked visiting Western Connecticut State, 9-0, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
In singles, senior Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) defeated junior Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug HS) at number one, 6-0, 6-3; senior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) downed junior Ryan Klem (Newport, RI/Southington HS) at number two, 6-4, 6-1, and junior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) defeated junior Chris Turner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield S) at number three, 6-0, 6-0. At number four, sophomore Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed senior Matt Romano (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy), 6-0, 6-3, at number five, freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) defeated freshman Romney Tiru (Waterbury, CT/ Sacred Heart HS), 6-1, 6-4; and freshman Dan Chouinard (Westport, MA/Westport HS) downed freshman Parth Bhavsar (Danbury, CT/Danbury HS) at number six, 6-0, 6-0.
Rathlev and Bejtlich defeated Bucknam and Klem at number one doubles, 8-3; Dugas and Chouinard downed Turner and Romano at number two, 8-1; and Lawton and freshman Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) defeated Tiru and Bhavsar at number three, 8-3.
"Their number one and two players were pretty good, and they gave Karsten and Brennan good matches, but overall, we were better," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Hopefully, this will get us ready for the tournament."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-3 and 5-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Western Connecticut dropped to 0-10 and 0-6 in the LEC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host the winner of the quarter-final match between Bridgewater State and Southern Maine Thursday afternoon in the Little East Conference semi-finals. The match was the final competition of the season for the Colonials.
