WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, Mass.) registered the lone singles victory for the University of Massachusetts men's tennis team as Division I Holy Cross defeated the Corsairs 7-2 this afternoon at the Sinnott Family Tennis Facility.
The visitors scored the first point of the match, winning at No. 1 doubles. Senior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, Mass./Moses Brown) and sophomore Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) earned an 8-6 win over the Crusaders' top tandem of Ryan Sullivan and Jimmy Ye. The hosts captured the doubles portion of the contest by winning at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Holy Cross rode its momentum into the singles competition, winning five of the six flights. Sullivan defeated Bejtlich in straight sets, while Ye posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chouinard. Lawton tried to stem the tide with a straight set win (6-3, 6-0) over Pat O'Shea at third flight singles. Senior Jon Reagan (Franklin, Mass.) won the first set at No. 4 singles, but Sean Frebes battled back to capture the final two sets to seal the victory for the hosts. Brandon Ynayan and Rob Buetti provided HC with an additional two wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday, April 12, when the Corsairs travel to Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University.
