NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Boston men's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory its intra-state rival University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Tennis Courts.
The Corsairs slipped to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference circuit, while the Beacons improved to 6-7 and 3-1.
UMass Boston raced out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competitions. Sean Cullen and Charles Lai posted won the top-flight doubles match 8-6 over senior Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.). The Beacons' No. 2 tandem of Eglis Bizhoti and Mark Grinhaus captured the tie-breaker 7-2 to edge junior Ray Lawton (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Joskolka (Mattapoisett, Mass.), 9-8. The visitors wrapped up the doubles session as Lyle Analetto and Jack Wang posted an 8-4 win over junior Malcolm Neville (Foxboro, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew Burdick (Dartmouth, Mass.).
UMass Boston stretched its advantage to 5-0, when Cullen and Lai opened the singles session with straight set victories. UMass Dartmouth cracked the scoring column as Lawton earned a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win over Bizhoti. The Beacons countered with a win at No. 4 singles before Jaskolka and Neville closed the match with straight-set victories.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on April 23, when the Corsairs travel to Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College.
