Entering his 11thseason as head coach of the UMass Dartmouth men's tennis team,TomMendellhas led the Corsairs to two of their best seasons ever inthe last three seasons.
Last year, theCorsairs went 11-1, winning all of their regular season matches andsweeping through the Little East Conference Tournament. Advancingto the NCAA Division III Championships for the second time in threeseasons, UMD lost to Roger Williams and finished 11-1.
Three years ago, UMDwent 13-2. The Corsairs avenged their only regular seasonloss whenthey defeated Salem State in theLEC championship match. UMassDartmouth advanced to the NCAAs, where they defeated Neumann in thefirst round before losing to seventh-ranked Williams. In bothseasons that the Corsairs advanced to the NCAA Division IIIChampionships, Mendell was named Little East Conference Coach ofthe Year.
In 10 seasons,Mendell's teams have compiled a67-47 record and he has led his teamto double-digit totals in wins on three occasions.
In his second seasonas a head coch, the Corsairs captured their eighth LEC Tournamenttitle in 2004 season after posting and 8-4 overall mark and a 3-2LEC mark...
A former local tennis professional and intercollegiate tennisplayer at Southeastern Massachusetts University and SMTI during themid-1960's, Mendellbrought awealth of tennis experience to theposition. He was a former tennis instructor at the Point ConnettTennis Association in Mattapoisett and served as assistant tennisprofessional at the Nonquit Tennis Club in Dartmouth. As part ofhis work as Recreation Director for the Town of Fairhaven from 1968through 1980, Mendell organized tennis clinics and taught tennisfor several years.
An accomplishedcollegiate tennis player in his own right, Mendell was a member ofthe University of Massachusetts Amherst men's tennis team whichcaptured the Yankee Conference championship in 1962. Mendell alsoplayed collegiate tennis for two seasons at SMTI and SMU, inaddition to playing basketball for a season, before graduating fromUMass Dartmouth's predecessor institution in 1967.
Mendell taught in theFairhaven Public School system for several years, serving as headsoftball coach from 1981 through 1986. He is a member of theFairhaven High School Hall of Fame. He also served as AthleticDirector at the Fairhaven Boys Club for many years.
Mendell first came tothe Athletic Department at UMass Dartmouth, serving as an EventsCoordinator for the Corsairs' intramural program, a position hestill holds. A resident of Fairhaven, Mendell is an active golferand member of Reservation Country Club.
