NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won a Little East Conference match for the first time this season, defeating visiting UMass Boston, 7-2, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Corsairs won two of the three doubles matches, winning the third doubles match by default. UMass Dartmouth then won four of five singles matches and won the sixth by default.
Senior Dave Gogoi (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS), sophomore Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS), senior Josh McCoy (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS) and freshman Andrew Zappala (Merrimack, MA/Pentucket Regional HS) all won in singles for UMass Dartmouth. Gogoi defeated junior Ali Al-Sabbagh (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS)at number two singles, 6-3, 6-4; Sims downed junior Amit Kumar (Bangalore, India/Malden-MA HS) at number three, 6-3, 7-6; McCoy downed freshman Reinaldo Lopes (Brussels, Belgium/Institut Saint-Jean Baptiste) at number four, 6-2, 6-2; and Zappala defeated sophomore C. Albert Thompson (Compton, CA/Bellflower HS) at number five singles, 6-0, 6-2..
The Corsairs improved to 2-5 and 1-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Boston fell to 4-7 and 2-3 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference match Sunday, while the Beacons will visit Johnson & Wales Monday.
