CHESTNUT HILL, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team swept all six singles matches and defeated host Newbury, 8-1, in their 2010 season opener at the Pine Manor College Tennis Courts Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs, who led, 2-1 after the doubles competition, wrapped up the match by taking five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Alex Ciampi (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) was one of three double winners on the day, defeating Jarryl McKee at number five singles, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) was another double winner in his first match for the Corsairs, downing Ryan Maliff at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0, after teaming with Ciampi to defeat Ben Weiner and Mike Foley at number two doubles,. 8-2. Freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) also made his UMD debut a successful one, defeating Foley at number four singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teaming with sophomore Joe Matrisciano (Westport, MA/Westport HS) to down McKee and Evan Fennell at number three doubles, 8-0.
"I was very happy with the way we played, especially considering that it was our first match of the year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We had a lot of newcomers, and they all played well. It was a good way to open the season."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0 with the victory, while Newbury dropped to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western New England next Thursday afternoon.
