NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won two of three split-set matches in singles and defeated visiting Eastern Nazarene, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.
Freshmen Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) and Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) won their singles matches in three sets. Parker defeated sophomore Jim Rich (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) at number two singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, while Giaquinto downed senior Tyler Restrick (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air HS) at number three singles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) was the third double winner for the Corsairs, downing freshman Chris Ramey (North Augusta, SC/North Augusta HS), 6-3, 6-2.
Parker and Lui defeated Restrick and Ramey at number two doubles, 8-4, while Giaquinto teamed with senior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS to defeat freshman Austin Steelman (Darlington, MS/The Tome School) and Rich at number one doubles, 8-4.
"I was pleased that we won," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell, "I was most pleased with the play of Mike Parker and Mike Giaquinto, who won three-set matches, as well as Brian Lui, all of whom won in both singles and doubles."
The Corsairs improved to 2-0 with the victory, while the Lions dropped to 2-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Johnson & Wales Thursday afternoon. Eastern Nazarene will host Anna Maria Wednesday.
