NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) and sophomore Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) each won twice as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team blanked visiting Newbury, 9-0, in their 2011 season opener at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

Lui teamed with sophomore Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) to defeat freshmen Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain/Foxcroft Academy) and Marc Jean-Jacques (Franklin Square, LI/Morning Star Christian Academy), 8-0, at number two doubles. He then defeated junior Ben Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Zygmont combined with junior Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis Charter School) to down Sean Haight and junior Ryan Maliff (Ashford, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional HS), 8-0, at number three doubles, then downed sophomore Evan Fennell (Palmer, AK/Palmer HS), 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles.

Four Corsairs won in their collegiate debuts. Freshman Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) teamed with sophomore Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) to defeat Weiner and sophomore Jarryl McKey (Brooklyn, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), 8-0, at number one doubles. Senior Taha Souayah (Ariana, Tunisia) defeated Font-Raventos, 6-0, 6-0, at number three singles; freshman Jonah Katz (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead HS) downed Jean-Jacques at number four singles, 6-1, 6-0; and sophomore Phil Vieira (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) won over freshman Mike Scibelli (Monson, MA/Monson HS) at number five singles, 6-0, 6-0.

"I was pleased with the play of all of our first-year players," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "It was nice to see our first year players get their first collegiate win, and it was good to see our captain, Brian Lui, and Cody Zygmont each win twice."

The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Nighthawks dropped to 0-3 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday afternoon. Newbury will host Lesley Saturday.
