PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and went on to defeat host Johnson & Wales, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the Moses Brown Tennis Courts Thursday afternoon.
Three Corsairs were double winners. Senior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) defeated Devin Kitterick at number one singles,. 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Freshman Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) downed Tucker Plimpton at number two singles, 7-5, 6-4, and sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) downed Drew Pontillo at number four singles, 6-1, 6-0. Parker and Lui teamed to defeat John Horton and John Sepowitz at number two doubles, 8-2, while Sims combined with freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) to defeat Kitterick and Plimpton at number one doubles, 8-6.
Sophomores Nolan and Trevor Blier (Westport, MA/Westport HS) also had successful 2010 debuts for Umass Dartmouth. Nolan Blier defeated Sepowitz at number five singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Trevor Blier downed Todd Zimmerman at number six singles, 6-4, 6-2.
"Ken Sims had a great day today," said Umass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "He won a tough first match at number one singles, and played very well in doubles. Mike Parker and Brian Lui were also double winners, and the Blier twins played well."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-0 with the victory, while Johnson & Wales fell to 1-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday..
