Men's Tennis Defeats Johnson & Wales, 8-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won eight times in straight sets en route to an 8-1 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon.
Five Corsairs were double winners. Junior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS), sophomore Mason Viau (Marion, MA/Bishop Hendricken HS/Connecticut) and freshmen Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT), Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) and Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) each won both of their matches.
Pandolfi defeated Dennis Russell at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Rathlev downed Devin Kitterick at number three, 6-1, 6-1. They combined to defeat Colin Black and James Adriano at number one doubles, 8-0. Sims downed Adriano at number five singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), and Lui defeated Eddie Brennan at number six singles, 6-2, 6-2. Sims and Lui defeated Taylor Horn-Speck and John Sepowitz at number three doubles, 8-1. Viau defeated Black at number one singles, 6-2, 6-0, and teamed with senior Christoph Forster (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to down Russell and Kitterick at number two doubles, 8-3.
"We played very well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "It was good to see our freshmen and younger players play as well as they did."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-1 with the victory, while Johnson & Wales dropped to 1-3 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday. The Wildcats will host Albertus Magnus Saturday.
