NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches, then won the first three singles matches and downed defending Little East Conference champion Western Connecticut State, 5-4, in the 2011 LEC opener for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
The key match of the day was between two former teammates, and UMD's sophomore Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) and defeated WCSU junior Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT/Danbury HS), 6-4, 6-4 at number one singles. Rathlev and Pandolfi were teammates on the Corsair team that won a first round match in the NCAA Division III Championships two years ago before Pandolfi transferred to WCSU.
"It was one of the best collegiate matches I've seen," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Both players played very well."
Leading 2-1 after doubles, the Corsairs got a win from sophomore Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS), who defeated senior Andrew Kelley (Weston, CT/Canterbury School) at number two singles, 6-0, 7-5. After Rathlev downed Pandolfi, freshman Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) defeated freshman Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug HS) at number three singles, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), to clinch the decision.
"That was a good win for us, and I was very pleased," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Karsten, Mike Parker and Matt Bejtlich were all double winners. There were some close matches that could have gone either way. I can't say enough about Karsten. Every game in his match was a long game, and they both played great tennis."
The Corsairs improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Colonials dropped to 2-1 and 0-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Becker Monday. WCSU will visit Salem State Wednesday.
