NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Salem State won close matches at number four and five singles to break a 3-3 tie and defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
The Corsairs, who trailed, 2-1 after the doubles matches, took a 3-2 lead when freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth HS) defeated sophomore Josh Giller (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) at number two singles, 6-2, 6-0, and sophomore Alex Ciampi (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) downed senior Brett Noll (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) at number six, 6-3, 7-5.
Senior Adrien Malosse (Triel Sur Seine, France/North Broward Prep) tied the score when he defeated UMD's Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) at number one singles, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Shawn Dowen (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) broke the tie when he defeated sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) at number four singles, 7-6, 7-5, and sophomore Johan DaSilva (Barquisimeto, VZ/Colegio Aplicacion) clinched the decision when he downed sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis Charter HS), 7-6, 6-4. Freshman Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) outlasted junior Alex Eisath (Renon, Italy/HOB-Kuntner) at number two singles, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.
"We played well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We could have won at either number four or number five singles. We were ahead in both matches, but we lost the first sets. This was a learning experience for our team. Mike Parker's match against Alex Eisath at number two singles was a great match. Our team is working hard, and that's good."
