Men's Tennis Downs Johnson & Wales

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches in defeating visiting Johnson & Wales, 6-1, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
Five Corsairs each won twice. Sophomore Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) defeated sophomore Todd Zimmerman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with junior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) to defeat Zimmerman and sophomore Drew Pontillo (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland HS), 8-0. Dugas downed senior Jesse Wils (New York, NY), 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) defeated freshman Chris Cummings (Westport Island, Maine/Wicasset HS) at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0, and combined with freshman Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) to defeat freshman Brian Martens (Islandia, NY/Central Islip HS) at number two doubles, 8-1. Junior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) defeated Martens at number five singles, 7-5, 6-3, and teamed with sophomore Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) to down freshman Robert Goggin (Tewksbury, MA/St. Mary's HS) and junior Taylor Horn-Speck (McAlester, OK/McAlester HS) at number three doubles, 8-4. Giaquinto defeated senior John Sepowitz (Uncasville, CT/Montville HS) at number six singles, 6-0, 6-3.
"It was good to have five double winners, and for Karsten, Brennan and Mike Parker to stay undefeated for the year in singles," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We played very well in preparation for a tough match tomorrow."
The Corsairs improved to 5-0 with the victory, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-8 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Southern Maine Friday. Johnson & Wales will visit Suffolk Saturday.
