Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team used their strength at the top of the lineup to defeat visiting Southern Maine, 6-3, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday.

The Corsairs won at number one and two doubles and took the top four singles matches en route to the victory.

Sophomore Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) gave UMass Dartmouth a 3-1 lead when he defeated USM's Zach Caron (Sr. North Conway, NH/Kennett HS) at number one singles, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) made it 4-1 when he downed sophomore Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, ME/Lincoln Academy) at number three singles, 6-4, 6-2.

The Huskies closed the gap when freshman Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) defeated junior Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) at number five singles, 6-3, 6-2, and freshman Corey Dyke (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) downed sophomore Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/ Falmouth HS) at number six singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Matt Bejtlich gave the Corsairs the clinching point when he defeated senior Michael Sarrizin (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston HS) at number four singles, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/ Falmouth HS/New York City Tech) defeated junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Profile HS) at number two singles, 6-2, 6-4.

"I was pleased with our top four players and our top two doubles teams, who remained undefeated," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Mike Parker and Matt Bejtlich played very well in singles, and they make a very good team in doubles. We are looking forward to one of our toughest matches of the year next Tuesday."

The Corsairs improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 6-5 and 1-3 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Tuesday. Southern Maine will host Salem State Wednesday.
