NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and went on to defeat visiting Rhode Island College, 8-1, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday.
The Corsairs had four double winners. Sophomore Mason Viau (Marion, MA/Bishop Hendricken HS/Connecticut), who teamed with senior Christoph Forster (Reading, MA/Reading HS) to defeat senior Rolando Yotharath (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket HS) and freshman Austin Werner (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde HS) at number two doubles, 8-1, downed sophomore Nate Rebello (Pawtucket, RI/Tolman HS) at number one singles, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT) defeated Werner at number two singles, 6-3, 6-3; freshman Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) downed sophomore Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI/Scituate HS) at number three singles, 6-2, 6-2; and Pandolfi and Rathlev combined to defeat Rebello and freshman Mike Ricci (Cranston, RI/Cranston West HS) at number one doubles, 8-5. Junior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) downed junior Garrett Smith (Exeter, RI/Exeter-West Greenwich HS) at number five singles, 6-4, 6-3, and combined with freshman Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) to defeat Aiello and Smith at number three doubles, 8-3.
"We won all three doubles, and got good, solid play, and I was pleased with the win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "Our freshmen, Troy and Karsten and our sixth man, Zach, all played very well." Viau, Pandolfi and Sims all remained unbeaten in singles in Little East Conference play at 5-0.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-1 and 4-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Rhode Island College dropped to 2-11 and 0-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass Boston Saturday. The Anchormen host Bridgewater State Saturday.
