PROVIDENCE, RI-Host Rhode Island College won five of six singles matches and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team, 6-3, in a Little East Conference match at the RIC Outdoor Tennis Courts Friday.
The Corsairs led 2-1 after the doubles matches. Senior Ken Sims and freshman Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) defeated Tigran Gasparyan and Matthew Allard at number one singles, 8-0, and sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis Charter HS) and freshman Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) defeated Nathanael Lee and Garrett Smith at number three doubles, 8-4.
Sims was the only Corsair to win in singles, defeating Gasparyan at number one singles, 6-3, 6-2. Fink lost to Allard at number five singles, 6-1, 7-5, and freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth HS) lost to Michael Aiello at number three singles, 6-4, 6-0.
"We played pretty well in doubles, but we didn't play so well in singles" said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "There were a couple of matches in singles that we might have won. We're a young team, and we are still learning how to win."
RIC improved to 6-7 and 3-2 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 4-5 and 0-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston Saturday.
