NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team did not lose a set and defeated visiting UMass Boston, 9-0, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Five Corsairs were double winners. Senior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) defeated sophomore T. Leng (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) at number one singles, 6-2, 6-1, freshman Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) defeated freshman Ryan Swann (Warren, VT/Harwood Union HS) at number two, 6-0, 6-3, and Sims and Parker combined to defeat Lag and Swann at number one doubles, 8-3. Freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth HS) defeated junior Himanshu Dubey (Lucknow, India/Medford, MA HS) at number three singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) downed freshman John Tran Nguyen (Revere, MA/Revere HS) at number four, 6-1, 6-4, and Giaquinto and Lui defeated Dubey and Nguyen at number two doubles, 8-5. Sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis Charter HS) defeated junior Andrey Boguslavskiy (Volgograd, Russia/Revere, MA HS) at number five singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with freshman Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) to defeat Boguslavsky and freshman El Jan Daulo (Philippines/Waltham, MA HS) at number three doubles, 8-1.
"I was very pleased with the way we played, we showed much improvement over the way we played yesterday," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell, "It was good to see us win and qualify for the tournament."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-4 and 1-4 in the Little East Conference with the victory, and clinched a spot in the Little East Conference post-season tournament, while UMass Boston dropped to 1-13 and 0-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State or Rhode Island College in the first round of the LEC Playoffs Tuesday afternoon. The Beacons will host Southern Maine Sunday.
