NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Sophomore Karsten Rathlev (Winchester, MA/Winchester HS) has been named LEC Men's Player of the Week, while freshman Matt Bejtlich (Rochester, MA/Moses Brown HS) has been named LEC Men's Rookie of the Week.
Rathlev won his only singles match and both of his doubles matches last week. He defeated former teammate Troy Pandolfi at number one singles and teamed with Bejtlich to defeat Pandolfi and Andrew Kelley at number one doubles as the Corsairs defeated defending champion Western Connecticut State, 5-4, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Bejtlich also went 2-0 in doubles and won his singles match against Brian Bucknam of the Colonials. Bejtlich's win clinched the decision for UMass Dartmouth.
"Karsten is probably one of the most talented players we've had since I've been here," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "He is very team-oriented and very helpful to all the players, especially to Matt Bejtlich, who he's been teaming with in doubles. Karsten has been practicing with Matt a lot, and the improvement in Matt's game is quite noticeable. Matt has a tremendous future here, since he's only a freshman now."
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass Boston Wednesday.
