NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team will return to post-season action when they visit Bridgewater State in a Little East Conference quarter-final playoff match Tuesday afternoon. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Corsairs will enter the tournament as the sixth-seeded team, and will take a 5-5 overall record and 1-5 LEC mark into Tuesday's match. The Bears are 8-6 and 4-2 and are the third seed.
"We have the potential to be successful in the tournament," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We all have to play up to the level of our ability. We can't have any letdowns, and we have to get off to a good start. The teams are very well-matched and there is no outstanding team, so it could be anyone's ballgame. You would have to consider Western Connecticut the favorite, and we had a pretty good match against them, so you never can tell."
The format for the LEC tournament is different than it is in regular season matches. The match will end as soon as a team has recorded five victories and clinched the decision.
"If you lose all three doubles matches, you're in a bind," said Mendell. "The other team needs just two more points, and the match could end quickly. We are still a young team, and each match is a learning experience for us in preparation for next year. We're looking forward to the tournament."
The winner of the match will play second-seeded Salem State in a semi-final match Friday at Western Connecticut State.
