Yarbough Breaks School Record, Four Place at ECAC Championships
NEW YORK, NY-Four members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team placed and one broke a school record on the first day of action at the two-day, Eastern College Athletic Conference championships at the Armory Friday evening.
Sophomore Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) placed third in the shot put at 41 feet, five inches, Sophomore Chris Perry (Providence, RI/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) was second in the triple jump at 47 feet, 10 ½ inches, while freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was seventh at 45-5 ½. In the shot put, senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) finished eighth with a personal best mark of 49 feet, 2 ½ inches, which broke the school record. Freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) advanced to the finals in the 60 meter dash, winning his heat in 6.97 seconds.
Junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) ran 7.99 seconds in the 60 meter dash trials, and did not advance to the finals. Senior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) threw the shot 35 feet, 9 ½ inches, and the distance medley relay team of freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS), Van Ness, and seniors Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) and Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) finished in 15:21.05.
"It was a good, solid first day," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was good to see Robert Yarbough break the school record in the shot put in his final indoor meet of the season. Phito Gondre looked good in the trials in winning his heat. It's been a long season for some of our people."
The meet will conclude Saturday.
