NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was named LEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
At Saturday's Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships, Van Ness won conference championships both at 100 meters (12.39 seconds) and at 200 meters (25.45 seconds), breaking the school record at 200 meters in the process. She also was a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team that finished first in the LEC in 50.53 seconds.
Gondre set meet and school records in winning the LEC and Alliance championships at 100 meters (10.79 seconds). He also won the title at 200 meters (21.96 seconds), and was a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team that was first in the LEC in 42.63 seconds,
"Jillian had an outstanding meet, winning the 100 and the 200 in the Little East Championships, and breaking the school record in the 200," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She has established herself as a legitimate New England contender in the sprints on the NCAA Division III level."
"Phito had two incredible times, setting a record in the 100 and putting himself on the cusp of NCAA qualifying marks in both events," said Gardiner. "He led the Corsair charge to a conference title."
The Corsairs will return to action at the New England Division III Championships this Saturday.
