CAMBRIDGE, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team got a couple of strong performances on the first day of competition at the two-day New England Division III Championships Friday evening at MIT's Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium.
In the discus, sophomore Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) finished second with a school record throw of 140 feet, one inch. She broke her own school record by 14 feet, and now ranks 21st in the nation in the discus.
In the javelin, sophomore Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was second with a toss of 189 feet, 11 ½ inches. He was in fifth place before he moved up in the standings when he recorded the mark on his penultimate throw in the competition.
"It was a great performance by both Krista and Joe," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It'sd a tribute to the work that they've done, and to the work that (Assistant Coach) Darren (DeAndrade) has done with both of them."
The meet will conclude Saturday..
