TROY, NY-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team turned in a second consecutive strong performance on the second and final day of action at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Championships Friday at Rensselaer's Ned Harkness Track.
Senior Robert Yarbough (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) finished fourth in the shot put at 52 feet, 3 1/4 inches, breaking the school record in the process. It was his first throw that was over 50 feet.
Sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) finished seventh at 800 meters in 1:53.16. He won his heat and was the only participant in his heat to place.
Freshman Phito Gondre (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) finished sixth in the 100 meter dash in 11.12 seconds. He also ran 200 meters in 22.17 seconds and finished 11th. Freshman Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) finished ninth in the high jump at 6-3 1/4.
Sophomore Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill), who presumably qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the hammer throw on Thursday, finished ninth in the discus at 128 feet, eight inches. In the shot put, senior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) finished 18th with a throw of 33-11 1/2.
"I'm very pleased, especially for Rob Yarbough, he's been a four-year member of our team, a captain, and he's just had a wonderful career," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He set the record on his last throw in the trials, which allowed him to advance to the finals. It was great to see Rob end his career with that type of performance. It was also nice to be at a meet with so many teams in the Northeast and see how important track and field is to them."
Chauvin should represent UMass Dartmouth at next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Southern California. The Corsairs will wait to see if anyone else qualifies after all the results are tabulated from meets this weekend.
