BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team turned in several good performances in their second and final meet of the fall semester, the Harvard Open at Gordon Track Saturday. No team scores were recorded at the meet.
For the women, sophomore Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) broke the school record, finishing first overall in the mile in 5:09.3. Freshman Michele-Le Miranda (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) also set a school record in the seldom-run 300 meters, finishing in 33.87 seconds. Senior Jamie Zizza (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) tied for fifth in the high jump at four feet, 11 inches, while junior Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) ran 55 meters in 7.44 seconds to qualify for the finals, then ran 7.69 and finished 15th overall.
Among the men, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) set a school record when he was first in the 600 meters in 1:21.76, while senior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) set a school record at 300 meters when he won his heat and finished sixth overall in 36.38 seconds. Freshman Brendan Jarousky (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was seventh in 36.66. Sophomore Aaron Amado (Randolph, MA/Thayer Academy) was sixth in the high jump at 6-3 ¾, junior Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) was fifth in the mile in 4:23.25, and sophomore Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) was sixth at 800 meters in 1:57.91.
"Considering how long the meet was, we had some very good performances," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We broke several school records, and had some strong performances in a large field that included schools from all over New England. It was a pretty bid meet. Now we're in good position to break for finals, and come back in January."
The Corsairs will break for the semester, returning to action when they travel to Tufts January 12th.
